Monique Lallier

Summerfield, North Carolina 
Monique Lallier began bookbinding in 1970 in Montreal with Simone B. Roy. She studied with Roger Arnoult in Paris and also with Edwin Heim and Hugo Peller. Lallier had a studio in Montreal for eight years before moving to the United States in 1987. She now lives and works in North Carolina. Lallier teaches students from all over the United States and works on various binding projects and commissions. She also does conservation work for Etherington Conservation Center.

Full Buffalo leather French-technique binding with edge-to-edge leather doublures and flyleaves. Pewter onlays over boards underlying the leather, silk embroidered headbands. The book was bound in 2001.

Design Description: 
Full leather French technique using black French Morocco du Cap, raised boards delineating the river beds, creased pewter to represent the rivers: Mississippi (main part of the front cover), Ohio (top right cover), Missouri (upper left side going on the back cover), and Arkansas (lower left side going on the back cover). Onlays of different colors used to represent the emotions (i.e. passion, kindness, sadness, love, possessiveness, selfishness, loyalty, trust) experienced by Huck, Tom, Jim, Miss Watson and Aunt Polly in the text. Onlays of marbled paper and thin wood on the pewter will represent the island and the raft. Title hand tooled on the lower part of the spine with white gold, and the author's name hand tooled just above the river line.
