North Stairs

The north staircase just beyond the first floor restroom vestibule doors has been an immediate route to collections since the annex was added to the building in 1973. Descending, students find the general stacks and a richly layered engraving by the French artist James Coignard. Staff members and escorted parties ascending move into the restricted area of the building devoted to Special Collections. On that central landing is the portrait of Margaret Bridwell Bowdle, daughter of J. S. Bridwell, and partner in his endeavor to establish a great library on this spot. At the top is a woodblock print from the Mikumo studio in Kyoto depicting Twelve Heavenly Generals who assumed vows of selflessness, compassion, and wisdom.
