SMU and Harvard alumni Carr P. Collins Jr. (1918–1985) presented this armoire to Bridwell Library, along with a number of other gifts over years including artifacts, archives, books, and funds for library purchases and programs. Collins served as vice president of the company founded by his father, Fidelity Union Fire & Casualty Company, now a component of one of the largest insurance providers in the world. At the end of World War II, U. S. Army Major Collins commanded the U. S. military escort for the Japanese surrender delegation. He was a member of the Panel of Arbitrators for the New York Stock Exchange, an appointee of a U. S. State Department trade mission to Pakistan, and Vice Consul of Italy. Collins was founder and benefactor of the Sangreal Foundation which promoted the development of interests in metaphysics, religion, and parapsychology.
