Carhart's Bible used by Bishop Asbury

The Holy Bible.
Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1806. (BRA2729)

This Bible was the property of John Wesley Carhart (1834–1914), a well-known Methodist minister, physician, inventor, and author who was born in Coeyman’s Patent, New York and later settled in Texas. It was acquired by Southern Methodist University in 1915.

Inscriptions in the Bible indicate that it was purchased in 1806 for the Methodist Episcopal Church at Coeyman’s Patent and that Bishop Asbury used it when he presided over the New York Annual Conference meeting there in May 1807.
