Deacon’s Orders of Drury Flowers

Deacon’s Orders of Drury Flowers, signed by Francis Asbury on January 21, 1816.

Farmer and Methodist preacher Drury Flowers was born in South Carolina in 1780 and died in Alabama in 1859. The fact that Flowers’s name does not appear in any published minutes of the Annual Conferences suggests that he may have been a lay preacher and local Deacon rather than a Conference member. This certificate, dated January 21, 1816, was probably signed in South Carolina, where Asbury had been detained by illness since late December 1815.  Ten weeks later Asbury died in Virginia while traveling to Baltimore for General Conference.
