Among the modern forces depicted in these dances of death are abstractions, including some that may be viewed positively in a different light, such as education and philanthropy. Ideology, doctrine, solidarity, and zealotry are specifically depicted for their darker side as instigators of hatred and strife. Character types like the zealot and the ideologue are portrayed simultaneously as both the embodiment and victim of Death.
