Traditions and Origins

Prior to the separation and serialization of images depicting specific character types, Dances of Death often took the form of murals showing a procession of several people, each accompanied by their own figure of Death. Kahn and Selesnick’s series of panoramic processions, Danse Macabre, provides this exhibition’s most explicit reference to this foundational tradition.
