War
World Wars I and II introduced the world to modern military machines and tactics, introducing genocide and devastation on scales previously unknown amid the rise of totalitarianism and fascism. Human cruelty and violence presented another case in which people themselves were active agents of Death, making Death less of an external force. Artists explored both the culpability and victimization of soldiers and civilians alike. The responsibility of world leaders was satirized, while specific group such as the Nazis came to embody Death.
