The Flagellation
Albrecht Dürer.
Passio domini nostri Jesu, ex Hieronymo Paduano, Dominico Mancino, Sedulio, et Baptista Mantuano, per fratrem Chelidonium collecta, cum figuris Alberti Dureri Norici Pictoris.
Nuremberg: Albrecht Dürer, 1511. (11011)
Dürer's Flagellation was one of the first woodcuts in the Large Passion series to be completed. It presents a symmetrical, somewhat static composition anchored by the central column, as if there were no escape from the physical torture.
