The Lamentation

Albrecht Dürer.
Passio domini nostri Jesu, ex Hieronymo Paduano, Dominico Mancino, Sedulio, et Baptista Mantuano, per fratrem Chelidonium collecta, cum figuris Alberti Dureri Norici Pictoris.
Nuremberg: Albrecht Dürer, 1511. (11011)

The woodcuts of the Lamentation and the Entombment were two of the earliest that Dürer designed for the Large Passion. Both of these prints emphasize human emotions, especially evident in the hand-wringing woman at the lower left of the Lamentation and the disconsolate St. John the Evangelist, who looks out at the viewer from the lower right of the same print.
