During the last decade of his life, Dürer turned increasingly to theoretical studies. These resulted in three publications: the Course on Measurement (1525); Several Instructions on Fortifications (1527); and Four Books on Human Proportions (1528). With these works Dürer became the first northern European artist to publish his own illustrated treatises.
