Extremely well preserved, this copy of Charles Wesley’s Hymns and Sacred Poems was signed and decorated with watercolor flourishes by “Willm Pitt, Winterborn Dancy, 1791.” The volume did not belong to either of the English Prime Ministers by that name, but rather an individual who lived in the Wiltshire village of Winterbourne Dauntsey. Local registration records for religious dissenters in the year 1802 list “The dwellinghouse of William Pitt, Methodist” as a certified meeting house.
