Mary Tooth, Methodist Preacher

[John Wesley and Charles Wesley].
Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Intended for the Use of Real Christians of all Denominations.
London: [s.n.], 1756. (04968)

Inscribed “Mary Tooth, given by her affect[ionate] Mother,” this book of Wesleyan hymns was owned by Mary Tooth (1778–1843), who served for more than forty years as a preacher and class leader in Madeley, Shropshire. Miss Tooth had experienced her religious conversion during a sermon on the Minor Prophets by Mary Bosanquet-Fletcher (1739–1815), the wife of John Fletcher, at the preaching room in Madeley. She and Mrs. Fletcher, who remained lifelong friends and colleagues, each did much to expand the roles of women in early Methodism.
