John Wesley annotated this set of his printer’s proof sheets with numerous marginal corrections, including the omitted passage entered at the foot of the exhibited page: “Till urged by Hate they found a quicker way, and forged pernicious Arms & learn’d the Art to slay.” In accordance with Wesley’s correction, the printer incorporated this verse from the ancient poet Horace’s Satires (I, 3, 100) into the finished edition.
