Letter from Littleton Fowler to Missouri Porter

Letter from Littleton Fowler to Missouri Porter, June 5, 1838.

In this letter written a few months after he arrived in Texas, Fowler courts Nacogdoches, Texas widow Missouri Lockwood Porter (1807–1891). Fowler, who had been sick for several days, writes “Thought at one time my life was in suspense, and there was only one golden chian [sic] of affection that bound me to earth. It was for you alone that I desired to live longer in this land of sickness and exile.” A few weeks later Fowler and Porter married.
