Chinese New Testament

[Chinese (High Wenli) New Testament].
Canton: British and Foreign Bible Society, 1815. (BRB0357)

Based on an unpublished translation by the Jesuit Jean Basset (1662–1707), this translation of the New Testament into the classical Chinese literary dialect of High Wenli was prepared by Robert Morrison (1782–1834), the “Father of the Protestant mission in China,” with assistance from William Milne (1785–1822). Exhibited is the second edition, issued in eight parts. The first edition, printed in smaller type, had appeared at Canton one year earlier. The entire Bible was first published at Malacca in 1823.
