Jacques Callot (1592–1635).
Vie de la Mère de Dieu representée par emblesmes.
France: Antoine Charlot, ca. 1628.
(BRB1646)

Jacques Callot utilized emblems and Latin epigrams to explain important moments and mysteries in the life of the Virgin Mary. For example, the Immaculate Conception is compared to sunlight shining through glass. Additional French verse written by Callot’s friend François Rennel (1583–1649) is intended to assist the reader in interpretation and understanding.
