German Version of Mazot

Fortunatus Faber (1664–1695).
Hochschätzbarer Seelen Ehren Thron: das ist Ein wahrhafftes Formular, oder allbewerteste Richtschnur ... die Seel in disem wanderstand, und jenem Vatterland in allweg sicher zu stellen.
Munich: Michael Wening, 1683. (BRB 1273)

An early translation of François Mazot’s Le tableau de la croix (1651–1653), this profusely illustrated 1683 Munich edition was engraved and published by Michael Wening (1645–1718) with German text by the Augustine preacher Fortunatus Faber. In imitation of Mazot’s original production, the present work includes double-page openings, many intended to be viewed and read together as a single unit. For example, the first forty leaves illustrate the various stages of the mass on the left side, with biblical scenes situated in the clouds above, and a variety of prayers located between two standing figures on the right side. Minor variations in text and image between the two versions can be noted, but one striking difference is the addition of engraved pages at the end of this later volume referring to the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683.
