Stowe, Woman in Sacred History

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896).
Woman in Sacred History.
London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle;
New York: J.B. Ford and Company, 1874. (ADJ9921)

The success of Uncle Tom’s Cabin granted Harriett Beecher Stowe widespread name recognition that was unprecedented among women authors. Thus, the publishers of the exhibited compilation of biographies of the women of the Bible took the highly unusual step of advertising Stowe’s authorship in prominent gilded lettering on the cover of the book – a common practice today in the marketing of popular books.
