Venetian Bible of 1495

[Latin Bible, with commentaries]. Biblia latina cum glossa ordinaria Walafridi Strabonis [. . .] et cum postillis Nicolai de Lyra.
Volume 2 of three.

Venice: Paganinus de Paganinis, 18 April 1495. (06154)

Nicholas de Lyra’s biblical commentary explicated many points concerning Ezekial’s vision of the temple in Jerusalem (Ezekiel 41). In this Venetian Bible of 1495, the exhibited woodcuts accompanying de Lyra’s commentary illustrate the floor plan of the temple, the three-story elevation of its facade, and the elevation shared by its northern and southern sides. The captions for these illustrations, printed in extremely small type, add a third layer of text to the hierarchy formed by the biblical text and the surrounding commentary.
