Richly hand-colored, this 1511 edition of the Vulgate features hundreds of small woodcuts previously used in various fifteenth-century Venetian editions. In the exhibited opening, the apocryphal book of Tobit begins with a woodcut of the blinding of Tobit, whose eyesight was corrupted by bird droppings. Having fallen into poverty and woe, Tobit later regained his sight through the intercession of the archangel Raphael, who recognized the old man’s steadfast reverence for the Lord.
