Koberger's German Bible of 1483, Genesis

[German Bible].
Volume 1 of two.
Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 17 February 1483. (06173)

The majority of the 109 woodcuts used in this Nuremberg edition of the German Bible of 1483 originally were produced in Cologne for Heinrich Quentell’s Low German Bible of c. 1478. Colored by hand, the exhibited woodcuts of Moses Leading the Israelites (Exodus 15) and of the Manna from Heaven (Exodus 16) are typical of the simplified landscapes, lively action, and garish costumes found in the Cologne woodcuts. The majority of the illustrations in this edition appear in the Old Testament; with the exception of four introductory portraits of the gospel authors and a series of eight Apocalypse scenes, the New Testament has no other illustration.
