Doré Bible

[French Bible]. La sainte Bible: selon la Vulgate.
Tours: Alfred Mame et fils, 1866. (Prothro B-204)

Perhaps the most inventive Bible illustrator of the nineteenth century was the Frenchman Gustave Doré (1832–1883), whose wood engravings for the Bible and other literary classics became popular throughout Europe and America. Doré was known for his dramatically lit night scenes and apocalyptic spectacles. In the exhibited frontispiece to the first volume, the Creator separates the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:3); in the second volume, the illustration for Revelation 12 incorporates Doré’s characteristic dramatic lighting effects and deep pictorial space, showing the horrific dragon in the darkness below while the Apocalyptic Woman appears in the distant brilliance of heaven.
