Latin Bible of 1607

[Latin Bible]. Sacra Biblia Vulgatae editionis Sixti Quinti Pont.
Max. iussu recognita, atque edita.

Venice: Apud Evangelistam Deuchinum, 1607. (BRB1132)

Although the editing of this Latin Bible was sponsored directly by Pope Sixtus V, the text was found to be faulty and the edition subsequently was withdrawn. Further controversy was caused by its woodcut illustrating King David’s unholy desire for the wife of Uriah (2 Samuel 11), which shows the naked Bathsheba in a highly revealing pose. Originally produced in the 1540s and first used in a Latin Bible by the Venetian printer Giovanni Gioliti in 1588, this woodcut violated the indecency strictures of the Council of Trent (1545–1563) and has been censored in several other copies of the 1607 Bible.
