Venice 1497 Latin Vulgate with Illustrated Titlepage

Latin Bible. Biblia latina.
Venice: Hieronymus de Paganinis, 1497.

Issued four decades after Gutenberg, this 1497 Latin Bible was produced in a compact format, convenient to carry and relatively affordable. Edited by Petrus Angelus de Monte Ulmi (active circa 1490s), the text has printed elements which would have previously been inserted by hand after publication. These include notes and guide letters in the margins and a table, or index, compiled by Gabriello Bruno (active 1480–1514). An additional printed feature, serving to attract potential customers, is an illustrated title page to identify and advertise the content. As in earlier printed Bibles, spaces for large manuscript letters at the beginning of each book and the vast majority of chapters were still included. In this copy these initial letters were never added.
