Cherokee Bible Sections in Multiple Copies

Cherokee Old Testament and New Testament text sections, folded but unbound.
Park Hill, Oklahoma: Mission Press, ca. 1850–1860. (00334)

In addition to bound volumes of Cherokee biblical texts, Harrison also possessed a remarkable number of folded but unbound signatures, often in multiple copies, of various Cherokee Bible parts published at the Mission Press in Park Hill. His complete set of gatherings for Genesis, for example, includes dozens of copies of chapters 37 through 48 and an incomplete set of pages for Exodus includes dozen of copies of chapters 22 through 38. Other books represented here include Isaiah, the four Gospels, Acts, the Epistles of Paul to Timothy, Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation. Originally to be bound and sold as complete texts, these remainders are evidence of the extensive Bible translation and publication program in Oklahoma in the mid-nineteenth century.
