Dikĕlĕ is one of a dozen Kele or Sheke languages found in the Niger and Congo regions of Africa. Printed in roman types with diacritics, this 1855 Gospel of Matthew, published in Gabon at the press of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, is the first appearance of any portion of the Bible in this language. A translation of the Gospel of John was later printed in 1879 in New York by the American Bible Society.
