Letter to Brian Bury Collins

John Wesley.
Letter to Brian Bury Collins.
January 14, 1780.

Dr. Heitzenrater’s research has done much to illuminate John Wesley’s lifelong concern for the poor. In this autograph letter addressed to Rev. Brian Bury Collins (1753–1799) of Everton in Bedfordshire, Wesley encouraged his colleague to turn his thoughts and actions to the poor of London: “You have seen very little of the choicest part of the London society. I mean the poor. Go with me into their cellars and garrets and then you will taste their spirits.”
