An Extract of the Rev. Mr. John Wesley's Journal

John Wesley.
An Extract of the Rev. Mr. John Wesley's Journal, from his Embarking for Georgia to his Return to London. 1740. (AFV8487/A-B)

A major topic of Dr. Heitzenrater’s research has been John Wesley’s missionary work in Georgia in 1736 and 1737. The displayed portion of Wesley’s published journals documents his departure for the New World on Tuesday, October 14, 1735. As Wesley wrote in his journal, “Our end in leaving our native country was not to avoid want (God having given us plenty of temporal blessings) nor to gain the dung or dross of riches or honor; but singly this--to save our souls; to live wholly to the glory of God.” Wesley’s companions on the expedition to Georgia included his brother Charles Wesley, Rev. Benjamin Ingham of Queen’s College, Oxford, and Charles Delamotte, the 21-year-old son of a London sugar merchant. Ingham’s manuscript copy of Wesley’s journal includes many details of the trip that were omitted from the published version.
