Arabic Edition

De imitatione Christi libri quatuor de Latino in Arabicum versi.
Rome: Typis Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, 1734.

(AFJ1130)

The wide influence of the Imitatio Christi is attested by this edition in Arabic, published by the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith for use by Roman Catholic missionaries. First published in 1663, this translation is attributed to the Dutch Carmelite monk Petrus Golius (1597–1672) of Scheidam, also known as Brother Coelestinus of St. Lidwina, who borrowed heavily from a translation attributed to Ignatius of Orleans (d. 1638), a Capuchin monk at Aleppo.
