Deluxe English Edition
Of the Imitation of Christ.
London: The Riverside Press, 1905.
(BRA0361)
Like many nineteenth- and early twentieth-century editions of the Imitatio Christi, this printing was intended less for pious reading than for the enjoyment of a fine-looking book. Printed on vellum with woodcut initials that were hand-illuminated in colors and gold, this English version was issued in a limited edition of ten numbered copies. It was expensively bound in gilt blind-tooled calfskin at Bumpus of Oxford Street, a fashionable London bookstore.
