Eighteenth-Century French Manuscript Guide to the Mass with Engravings

Manière d’entendre la messe.
[France? 18th century].
Manuscript on paper with 6 engraved plates by Hieronymus Wierix and Anton Wierix.
(BRMS 92)

This spiritual guide to the Mass begins with overarching matters for the reader to reflect upon and includes instructions on prayer and meditations for the ceremony. The volume concludes with a French translation of the Latin litany of the Mass. The six plates bound in the volume are by Hieronymus Wierix and Anton Wierix, members of the enormously prolific late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century family of engravers. The inclusion of the plates in this eighteenth-century manuscript attest to the continued circulation of such devotional prints more than a century after first being issued.
