Scripture and Worship
Scripture constitutes one of the core collections at Bridwell Library, with numerous significant works in the Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Bible Collection, The Thomas J. Harrison Bible Collection, and the Ruth and Lyle Sellers Medical Collection. Manuscript highlights exhibited here include a twelfth-century Greek liturgical lectionary, a thirteenth-century portable Paris Bible, a fifteenth-century Wycliffite New Testament in Middle English, a seventeenth-century Chinese Torah Scroll, four Qurans from Persia produced between 1600 and 1900, and Armenian, Ethiopic, and Hebrew Bible portions. Complementing these sacred writings are manuscripts for worship and various ceremonies. These include a fifteenth-century missal for the Use of Sarum, two fifteenth-century Italian breviaries, two sixteenth-century works produced for the use of Spanish nuns, an early seventeenth-century cartagloria with a miniature reproducing Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, and two eighteenth-century liturgical manuscripts for use in specific localities.
