In late 1982 theologian Martin Marty interviewed Albert Outler in preparation for writing an article about him. Upon previewing the draft article, Outler offered numerous editorial suggestions and this humorous response: “Your first draft brought up unbidden the old story of the widow at her husband’s funeral who, hearing the eulogy, sent one of the children up to check on the casket, to make sure they’d got the right corpse.”
Marty’s article appeared in the February 29, 1984 issue of The Christian Century under the title “Albert C. Outler: United Methodist Ecumenicist.”
