Psalms
Psalterium cum apparatu vulgari firmiter appresso.
Strassburg: Mathias Hupfuff, 1506. (BRA0842)
The texts of the Psalms in Latin and vernacular German translation are printed here side by side in this early sixteenth-century edition. Although many associate German scriptural translation with Martin Luther, seventeen German Bibles and several German Psalters were printed prior to the Reformation. The hand-colored woodcut initial introducing the first psalm depicts King David, who has traditionally been regarded as the author of the Psalms.
