The Episcopal Address

The Episcopal Address of the Bishops of The United Methodist Church to the Uniting Conference, April 22, 1968.

Order of Service for the presentation of the Episcopal Address, April 21, 1968.

The delivery of an episcopal address during the opening day of General Conferences was a long-standing tradition in both the EUB and Methodist churches. For each quadrennial conference one bishop is chosen to compose and present a “review of the life and thought of the Church and its responsibility in contemporaneous society” on behalf of the entire Council of Bishops. In the Uniting Conference episcopal address, Bishop Lloyd C. Wicke (1901–1997) reflected on the history, vocation, witness, and possibilities of the new denomination, concluding: “As we depart these halls, let us march as one family, one community bound by a great affection because of our faith in Christ, permitting no walls of separation to remain between us.”
