Formulario for Nuns

Formulario de profesión de novicias.
Manuscript in Latin and Spanish on vellum. [Spain, ca. 1591]. (BRMS 144)

Written mainly in Latin, but with Spanish rubrics (headings) in red ink, this manuscript Formulario contains the prayers and oaths used in the ceremony in which female novices made their profession as nuns and received the monastic vestments that they would wear for the remainder of their lives. Alternate plural endings for certain Latin words, also entered in red ink, allow for the profession of several nuns at the same time, instead of only one. According to an unverified tradition, this Formulario was made for the Augustinian nuns of the Convento de la Encarnación in Seville, founded in 1591.
