In the fall of 1978 Marc Chagall (1887–1985) created original copperplate etchings printed on ochre aquatint. Each image appears facing the text that inspired it, selected from a translation by the Benedictine monks of Saint-Lambert-des-Bois, published in Paris by Éditions Desclée de Brouwer in 1973. Printed in an edition of one hundred seventy-five on Vélin d’Arches paper, this copy, number 36, is signed by the artist.
