Following Hippocrates, Galen was the most notable physician of antiquity. He studied medicine in Pergamum as well as in Smyrna, Corinth, and Alexandria. An enormously influential author into the Middle Ages, Galen's writings were considered authoritative by Greek, Roman, and Arabic physicians.
