The sheets will be sewn on three tapes, all text block edges will be gilded, and silk headbands will be sewn by hand. The title will be stamped in gold on the spine and the framed lines and dagger-shaped corner pieces will likewise be tooled before casing in. A custom engraved brass die will impress the author's cascading initials inside the central red leather inlay. Please imagine Bernard Middleton's handwriting in place of the cursive font shown in the design proposal. The binding will also feature marbled endpapers by Catherine Levine. I often refer to Middleton's works when repairing antique books. It would be an honor and a delight to execute a fine binding of The Restoration of Leather Bindings.]]>2022-11-26T12:54:35-05:00
]]>https://bridwell.omeka.net/items/show/2262The design evokes the gothic style of binding prevalent during the author's lifetime. Textblock disassembled, repaired as needed, and then sewn on five double-cord stations. Unbleached linen cords laced into cured, quarter-sawn wooden boards channeled, beveled, and fitted with brass closures chiseled into fleur-de-lis patterns and hinged with brass escutcheon pins. Traditional tightback binding with quarter alum-tawed deer skin, tooled lines and fleur-de-lis stampings in blind, title on spine in ink rather than stamped or tooled. Plain wound endbands sewn on rolled linen cores and 100% cotton paper endpapers hand made by the binder.]]>2022-11-26T12:54:34-05:00

Textblock sewn on five frayed linen cords, painted pastepapers reminiscent of an autumnal sky and landscape will cover the boards, author and title stamped in gold, top edge gilt, goatskin leather headbands, and camel Hahnemühle Ingres paper endsheets.]]>2022-11-26T12:54:33-05:00
]]>https://bridwell.omeka.net/items/show/2107The design for Borges’ Ficciones is suggested by the mysterious encyclopedia described in “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius.” The volume number is a hint from the infinite “Library of Babel.” English fine binding in full yellow goatskin with recessed onlays of black, silver and blue leather. The blind-tooled title and conservative decorations on the spine are evocative of early twentieth-century encyclopedias. The platinum-tooled phrase “Orbis Tertius” is complemented by three spheres. The hollow-back binding also features sewn silk headbands and marbled endpapers by Catherine Levine.]]>2022-11-26T12:54:32-05:00
