Description
An account of the resource
Box binding with three-board structure using Harmatan Nigerian goatskins, black for the binding and dark red for the doublures, with designs based on the Paris 1788 edition of the text. Hand-gilded 23k lines on all three sides of box binding would resemble the engraved plate in the book. Hand-gilded gold circles on the "sliding doors," made of aluminum sheets, covered with black goatskin. The doors would slide from the center to both sides. In the center will be a magnetic half-round boss, behind which the door would open and close. The same bosses are also in the center above and below the window. Image of the author will be on the inside of the front board, visible when sliding doors are open. The author's portrait will also be on a wooden board, covered with gold leaf and egg tempera painting suggesting illumination on a parchment. Doublures, covered with dark red goatskin, will have gold printed phrases derived from the text.

Traditional-style tight-joint binding, sewn on seven raised bands covered in beige Niger goatskin and tooled with blind lines evocative of fifteenth-century blind-tooled bindings of the time when The Imitation of Christ was first published. Onlay of azure blue goatskin in an eighteenth-century shape on the front cover, echoed with blind tooling on the back cover, refers to the 1788 Didot printing of this edition. Linoleum cuts on both front and back covers in the style of fifteenth-century woodcuts, embossed in the leather and overlapping both colors on the front board. On front cover only, the linoleum cuts representing people from the author’s time and today imitating Christ. Endpapers will be chosen when the binding is complete, possibly Cockerell marbled papers with hinges, or a toned handmade paper. Gold tooled title in a typeface similar to that found in the 1788 printed text.

Description
An account of the resource
Design draws upon late eighteenth-century Rococo patterns as well as the world-wide pan-historical tradition of making jeweled bindings for spiritual texts. Exuberant lines incorporate references to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Crucifixion, and the Trinity and are also meant to suggest growth and renewal. Flyleaves (visible through the grill work of the boards) include an abstracted thorn bush pattern to be digitally printed using archival carbon pigment inks on .5 mm thick Hewit undyed calfskin. Boards of hand forged Argentium sterling silver 1/8" square wire mounted with synthetic rubies set in sterling bezels, all fixed connections silver soldered, with sterling silver tube hinges connecting the covers to the binding spine. Spine strip will be made of blackened Argentium sterling silver with the title laser etched into the metal revealing untarnished silver. Text will be disbound, then attached to binding using ruby-headed bolts screwed through spine strip and into threaded inserts counter sunk into the hardwood spine form.

The pages of the book will be folded to form a cross and the volume will be bound in plain sackcloth. The binders will harvest fiber from plants growing around the monument to Thomas à Kempis at Mount Saint Agnes in the Netherlands and then use these fibers to make the endpapers for the bound volume. The book will be placed in a hinged wooden chemise made of Lebanese olive and cedar, woods said to have been used to construct the cross of Jesus. The chemise will be studded with gold and jewels, similar to select bindings on early manuscript volumes. The book is to be rebound as if it were a holy relic, while the unornamented sackcloth reflects the poverty, chastity, and obedience of the Brethren of the Common Life.

French technique lace-in boards, covered in full leather in Harmatan purple goatskin, sewn headbands of purple and gold, gold top edge may be added if this does not create conservation problems. Boards laced in with relief decoration raising the leather on front and back covers, recessed decoration on the front, back, and spine to accommodate gold inlay, spine inlay with title tooled in black. Hand carved two-ply board with 14k gold acrylic ink. Endpapers will be original handmade paper created by the binder with hand-painted 14k gold decoration to match the crosses on the cover. The inspiration for this design is the Jerusalem cross, the hallmark for the Christian church. The chosen colors are important to Christianity and appropriate for this title: purple is associated with people seeking spiritual fulfillment and gold symbolizes immutability, eternity, and perfection.

Description
An account of the resource
This commentary on the New Testament by the Catholic theologian Erasmus of Rotterdam, contains numerous passages that were inked out or excised by a censor because they were considered inconsistent with traditional interpretations of the scriptures. The book's title page also bears an inscription in Spanish stating that the volume was "Visto e corregido" ("inspected and corrected") in 1587 according to an official catalogue of expurgations published by the Inquisition.

Description
An account of the resource
Throughout the history of Christianity, various ecclesiastical authorities have argued that their jurisdiction over the censorship of books has a scriptural basis. To that end, the Index librorum prohibitorum published by the Catholic Church in 1758 features an engraved frontispiece that illustrates the Biblical account in the Acts of the Apostles 19:18-19.

Description
An account of the resource
The first papal decree to list forbidden writings was the Decretum Gelasianum, attributed to Pope Gelasius (d. 496). While this list canonized the works of St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and other "orthodox fathers," it also enumerated which Christian writings were to be rejected as apocryphal and which were to be condemned as heretical. This papal decree served as the point of departure for all subsequent Christian censorship.

This catalogue of heretical writings was compiled during the first years of the Protestant Reformation by Bernard of Luxemburg, a Dominican theologian and Inquisitor of Cologne. It was among the first publications to identify the "heretical" works of Martin Luther and his followers, and in subsequent decades it served as the basis for several regionally administered lists of prohibited books.

Description
An account of the resource
The Catholic Church actively defended its suppression of controversial literature. This collection of seven essays by the Bishop of Roermond in the Netherlands includes one concerning the need for censorship of the press. Praising the essential role of writing within the history of Christian learning, the author commented that the invention of printing by Johannes Gutenberg had resulted in a world infected by "pernicious lies."

This magnificently illuminated Missal was censored in the sixteenth century by order of Henry VIII (1491–1547). Unable to resolve his religious, political, and personal conflicts with Pope Clement VII and Pope Paul III, the king broke with the Roman Church and decreed in 1538 that all mention of the papacy should be removed from England's service books.

The Catholic theologian Erasmus of Rotterdam continued to modify his Annotationes on the New Testament for many years following their first publication in 1516. In 1526, however, the Annotationes were condemned by the Faculty of Theology at the University of Paris. Erasmus's 1532 Declarationes present his counter-arguments to each of the charges against his work. In each section his original proposition is followed by the Faculty's "Censura" ("condemnation") and then Erasmus's "Declaratio" ("reply").

Bible New Testament - Commentaries
Description
An account of the resource
In this three-part work, the most conservative of the theologians at the University of Paris outlined his objections to the commentaries of two leading biblical scholars, Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples (c. 1455–1546) and Erasmus of Rotterdam. Béda's censures of Erasmus's Paraphrases of the Gospels and Epistles comprise the third part of the work. In response, Erasmus appealed to King Francis I of France, who ordered that Béda's "odious remarks" must be withdrawn from the market.

An account of the resource
In 1552, in an unprecedented action by a printer, Estienne published this response to the Sorbonne's condemnations, offering an introductory account of his two decades of conflict with the Parisian censors and a point-for-point defense of his Bible. This copy was inscribed by an early owner, Jean-Frédéric Ostervald (1663–1747), a leading Swiss Protestant theologian whose French translation of the Bible appeared in 1744.

Description
An account of the resource
A direct outcome of the Council of Trent, the Index librorum prohibitorum ("Index of Prohibited Books") provided a list of authors and works that were banned by the Catholic Church. The first Tridentine Index prohibited the complete writings of 610 authors, identified 69 additional authors whose prohibited works were listed individually, and banned 297 anonymous titles. As would be the case with all indexes of prohibited books, no explanation for a text's suppression was provided.

The Tridentine Index of 1564 presented ten rules that were established by the Council of Trent to control the censorship of texts. In the Index librorum prohibitorum that accompanies this 1664 edition of the Council's decrees, the ten rules were reprinted in full. These rules were expanded and modified over the centuries, but they remained the core determinants for Catholic censorship until use of the Index librorum prohibitorum was discontinued in 1966.

Catholic Church - Reform
Description
An account of the resource
The Onus ecclesie was listed in the Tridentine Index in Class III among the anonymous works though its author is now known to be Berthold Pürstinger. Written in 1519, the work was a daring call for internal reform within the Catholic Church. In the large woodcut by Jörg Breu, the earthly Church suffers a firestorm, plagues of insects, and attacks by Satan, as predicted in the quotations from the Book of Revelation held aloft by God and the angels.

Description
An account of the resource
This 1570 edition of the Index librorum prohibitorum was augmented for King Phillip II's Netherlandish subjects with the king's edict proclaiming that the authority to censor books emanates from the Crown and that its enforcement will be overseen by the Duke of Alva (1507–1582), Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. The accompanying Index, a reprint of the Tridentine version of 1564, includes a supplement listing prohibited Bibles and other books printed in Spanish, French, and Dutch.
