<a href="/items/browse?advanced%5B0%5D%5Belement_id%5D=41&advanced%5B0%5D%5Btype%5D=is+exactly&advanced%5B0%5D%5Bterms%5D=The+most+important+German+artist+before+Albrecht+D%C3%BCrer+was+Martin+Schongauer.+Schongauer%E2%80%99s+prints+were+the+first+to+combine+the+elegant+naturalism+developed+by+the+early+Netherlandish+painters+with+the+graphic+clarity+offered+by+the+new+medium+of+copperplate+engraving.+Signed+with+the+artist%27s+%22M%2BS%22+monogram.">The most important German artist before Albrecht Dürer was Martin Schongauer. Schongauer’s prints were the first to combine the elegant naturalism developed by the early Netherlandish painters with the graphic clarity offered by the new medium of copperplate engraving. <a href="/items/browse?advanced%5B0%5D%5Belement_id%5D=41&advanced%5B0%5D%5Btype%5D=is+exactly&advanced%5B0%5D%5Bterms%5D=The+international+influence+of+D%C3%BCrer%E2%80%99s+%3Cem%3ESmall+Passion%3C%2Fem%3E+woodcuts+can+be+seen+in+this+Italian+book+of+meditations+on+the+Passion%2C+which+reveals+obvious+dependence+on+D%C3%BCrer%E2%80%99s+image+of+Christ+before+Caiaphas.+Here%2C+although+an+anonymous+Venetian+artisan+has+simplified+D%C3%BCrer%E2%80%99s+composition+of+Christ%E2%80%99s+trial%2C+the+high+priest%E2%80%99s+recoiling+posture+clearly+was+derived+from+the+1511+woodcut.">The international influence of Dürer’s <em>Small Passion</em> woodcuts can be seen in this Italian book of meditations on the Passion, which reveals obvious dependence on Dürer’s image of Christ before Caiaphas. Here, although an anonymous Venetian artisan has simplified Dürer’s composition of Christ’s trial, the high priest’s recoiling posture clearly was derived from the 1511 woodcut.</a>

<a href="/items/browse?advanced%5B0%5D%5Belement_id%5D=41&advanced%5B0%5D%5Btype%5D=is+exactly&advanced%5B0%5D%5Bterms%5D=Illuminated+manuscript+with+psalms+to+be+recited+over+the+course+of+a+week.+There+are+large+gilt+initials+and+an+illuminated+portrait+of+King+David.+This+Psalter+highlights+the+quality+of+manuscript+illumination+which+is+conservative.+Evidently+created+for+a+nun+in+a+local+convent%2C+the+manuscript+bears+a+colophon+indicating+that+it+was+completed+in+Nuremberg+on+February+3%2C+1496.">Illuminated manuscript with psalms to be recited over the course of a week. There are large gilt initials and an illuminated portrait of King David. This Psalter highlights the quality of manuscript illumination which is conservative. Evidently created for a nun in a local convent, the manuscript bears a colophon indicating that it was completed in Nuremberg on February 3, 1496.</a>
