Description

The book is covered with a stone-washed, black leather dustcover with abalone shell, decorative onlays and hand-cut leather titling. The main book cover is full goatskin, sewn-on-tape binding with abalone shell, leather and deer parchment onlays. The cover design alludes to the themes of myth and nature's beauty in Longfellow's poetry. Reflecting mist-laden lakes, rustling reeds, and green forests suggesting the deep relationship of humans to the landscape as a place of paradise and mystery. Dear parchment dusted with gold pigment powder expresses the setting sun sparkling on water in the golden hour and pollen floating in the summer air in meadows budding with life. Silk headbands embroidered in tones of green and redwood. Leather joint construction with moss green velour doublures. Decorative fore-edges in dappled shades of green Japanese watercolor to emulate the deep forest. Feather pattern hand-marbled end sheets by Catherine Levine.
