First edition of the Imitatio Christi. The Imitatio Christi is the classic expression of the Devotio Moderna, or "modern devotion," a movement that responded to the widespread need for deepened spiritual life in the years before the Reformation. It consists of four Books: the first two counsel the reader on the spiritual life; the third deals with the inward consolation of the soul; and the fourth concerns the virtues of Communion.
