The first Bible printed in England, this 1535 Latin Bible was compiled by King Henry VIII (1491–1547) from earlier editions of St. Jerome’s Vulgate. Published just prior to the King’s break with the Roman Church, the edition includes all of the New Testament, but only the books Genesis through Judges, Psalms, Proverbs, and Wisdom from the Old Testament. A companion volume containing the other books, mentioned in the preface, was never published. Bridwell Library’s copy is one of seven recorded copies and only the second copy in the United States.
