Weigel's Picture Bible

[German Bible. Selections]. Biblia ectypa. Bildnussen auss Heilige Schrifft dess Alt- und Neuen Testaments. Engraved by Christoph Weigel. Augsburg: C. Weigel, 1787. (BRB0174)

Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) executed this monumental illustrated work, an entirely engraved edition of Bible selections that includes three title pages, eleven full-page illustrations, twelve plates containing three images each, and 816 plates illustrating four biblical scenes each. Above each scene is the Biblical citation and a short Latin caption while engraved below is a longer quotation from the German Bible. The first edition of Weigel’s picture Bible was published in 1695; this re-issue of 1787 attests to the longstanding interest in Weigel’s images and this engaging format.
