Deed granting 160 acres of land to Fowler Institute

Deed granting 160 acres of land to Fowler Institute, September 20, 1855.

As Methodists settled Texas, establishing preaching points and Sunday Schools, they also founded many educational institutions. The Fowler Institute, named in honor of Rev. Littleton Fowler, operated in Henderson, Texas, from 1850 to 1861. The exhibited manuscript deed from 1855 granted the trustees of Fowler Institute 160 acres of land. The donor was Robert A. Terrell (1820–1881) of Kaufman County, Texas, namesake of the City of Terrell.

Between 1839 and 1860 Texas Methodists founded twenty-one academies, institutes, colleges, and universities.
