McKenzie Institute opened in Clarksville, Texas, in 1839 as a private, co-educational, primary school. Under the direction of owner-President Rev. Dr. J. W. P. McKenzie (1806–1881), the institute became a secondary school, then achieved college status in 1848. In 1859 Dr. McKenzie donated the college to the East Texas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. McKenzie College closed in 1868.
