Venice 1478 Latin Vulgate

Latin Bible. Biblia latina.
Venice: Leonardus Wild for Nicolaus de Frankfordia, 1478. (06134)

The earliest complete printed Bible in the Harrison Collection is this edition published at Venice in 1478. Produced twenty-three years after the completion of the Gutenberg Bible, it is possible to note variations as well as continuities between the two works. This 1478 edition was also printed in folio, but with smaller page and type sizes. Initial letters for books and chapters, such as the initial “I” at the beginning of Genesis, were still to be added by hand after publication, but the headings for each book were printed with the text. In this copy the folio numbers have also been added in manuscript, and marginal notes by an early reader are found throughout the volume.
