Early American Bibles
A natural extension of the English Bible tradition, Bibles produced in the United States constitute another strength of the Harrison Collection. Highlights include three significant eighteenth-century German Bible editions printed by the Saur family in colonial Pennsylvania, published while the printers of London, Oxford, and Cambridge continued to hold royal patents to print the English Bible. From the post-Revolutionary period, selections include first American editions of the English Bible (1782) and the Catholic Bible (1790) as well as the first English translation by an American (1808), the first complete translation of the Bible by a woman (1876), and other landmarks of Bible printing in America.
